Jess Saunders
GIS Specialist
Jess is a GIS Consultant which joined the Ecology co-op in October 2024. Jess holds a BSc in Environmental Sciences from the University of Brighton, with specific focus on GIS, environmental management and ecotoxicology; producing a dissertation on how endocrine disrupting chemicals are affecting the reproductivity of blue mussels located in Chichester Harbour. Discovering a passion in GIS and environmental management in her undergraduate degree, she undertook an MSc in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing with Environmental Management at the University of Brighton. Skills acquired included theoretical and practical knowledge behind LiDAR and Radar satellite systems, as well as, software systems of ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, SNAP, ENVI, and coding languages Python and JavaScript. From her MSc, and a 3-month agricultural consultancy placement, techniques of environmental restoration, creation through GIS with the use of BNG was also introduced. All skills adopted allowed a completion for Jess's master's thesis, which evaluated how Radar technology can be utilised for monitoring saltmarsh restoration through inundation mapping and plant height measurement retrieval; in reference to three UK wetland sites.
Jess's passions outside of work include exploring rock pools for flora and fauna identification, fossil hunting, photography and vegan cooking.
